A psychedelic schizophrenic thriller starring Nicolas Cage. The film leads you on a wild goose chase. At first, it hints at a stylized atmospheric action film, then turns into a heart-pounding thriller, and in the end, it turns into something like a psychological trip with a vague or overly superficial idea that seems to be based on the personal experiences of one of the authors. It feels like you're watching everything out of the corner of your eye. Bright colors flash by, glare reflects off the screen, and the essence periodically slips away.
The plot: The main character from the US arrives in Australia with his son to visit his father's homeland. There, he wants to buy the house where he spent his childhood and surf, getting the high he once experienced in his youth. But the beach is occupied by a gang of local thugs. The gang leader is something of a guru of a men's club with an aggressive philosophy. The gang, of course, does not accept the main character, and he tries to resist, gradually sinking into despair, anger, madness, and confusion from heavy thoughts and memories. All this takes place under the scorching sun and resembles a harsh bad trip. But will the main character find purification and satisfaction after going through all this? We will see at the end of the film.
The film attracts with its dissonant atmosphere of idyllic images and harsh circumstances. But it feels like the film doesn't let you immerse yourself in the plot, but keeps you at a distance. Because of this, there is a feeling of incompleteness and slight dissatisfaction. It's a strange film, which I recommend to those who like strange films.
