This film interested me as Tim Burton's first feature-length work, and as a fan of his work, I couldn't miss it!
Overall, I liked the film, although I was expecting more dark humor and fantasy. But then I remembered that it's a family film, and I realized that it was my mistake, not the director's. After all, every genre has its own rules that the director must follow! Now let's take a closer look at the film:
The plot centers on Pi-Vi and his bicycle, which he loves very much, but it is stolen by the spoiled son of a local rich man, Francis, who has always liked this bike (there is also a girl who loves Pi-Vi, but he completely ignores her). P.V. is very upset and rushes to search for his bicycle, announcing a large reward for its return on the radio. Francis, afraid that his crime will be discovered, throws the bike away, and the desperate P.V. goes to a fortune teller, who ‘predicts’ that he will find the bike in a very distant place (Alamo). And P.V. rushes off in search of it.
Overall, the plot is quite standard, but not boring, as the constant curiosities that our hero gets into keep us entertained (and the scene of the bicycle rescue is worthy of the highest praise and will make you laugh heartily).
The actors are very well cast, especially Paul Rubens (the only thing that bothers me is the first scene in his house where, in my opinion, he overdid it a bit with his grimaces and laughter, but in the other scenes I liked his performance) and Mark Holton. The supporting actors are also great, and none of them cause any complaints!
Normal and healthy, but in places quite peculiar! There are no frankly bad moments or jokes here, and there are plenty of good ones, so the film is fine in that respect, but they are distributed a little unevenly and the first half of the film is much more boring than the second!
A good family film that leaves only good impressions! Of course, there is not enough of the “Tim Burton” that we encounter in his subsequent creations (I think this is due to the genre), but his signature style, for which I love him, is still present here (the many mechanisms in P.V.'s house, his dreams, and the scene with the ghost truck driver). So, I recommend this film to fans of family films and those interested in Tim Burton's early work, while other viewers can decide for themselves whether to watch it.
