I decided to watch the film ‘Better Off Dead’ because it stars my favorite actor John Cusack (‘2012’, ‘Intuition’, ‘The Hustlers’). And in the end, I was once again convinced that he is a versatile actor, capable of playing in both disaster movies and comedies.
The film tells us about a young man named Lane, who lives with his parents and brother. It would seem to be an ordinary family, but each member of the household is very peculiar. Take his mother, for example. Every morning, she spoils her family with new dishes from a recipe book, but she always seems to be missing one or more of the necessary ingredients. The result is very strange food, which at one point very amusingly “slips away” from Lane.
Or his younger brother, who is only seven years old. He is very quiet, reads books like Young Technician, and creates real laser guns from children's kits.
As for Lane himself, he is a completely ordinary guy, and everything in his life is going well until he is dumped by the girl he simply adored. After that, he constantly tries to kill himself, but he can't do it... He seems to want to, but he constantly changes his mind for some reason.
It is striking how humorously the director was able to play on all the problems of the main character. It is quite possible that Savage Steve Holland partly showed himself as a young man in this film.
Better Off Dead is a film from twenty-five years ago, but it is still relevant today.
