"Edge of Tomorrow" is a sci-fi film where an alien invasion a la "Future War" is mixed with the so-called "Groundhog Day" phenomenon, where the hero relives the same day over and over again. In contrast to the well-known film from 30 years ago starring Bill Murray, the phenomenon of reliving the same day is explained clearly and distinctly in this film, and it is connected to the alien physiology.
The thing is that the main character, played by none other than Tom Cruise himself, before his death is sprayed with bluish blood of the alien alpha-male, who has an ability to relive this day again and again in case of his death, thus aliens anticipate all human actions beforehand and win the war for the planet.
Partner of the famous actor is Emily Blunt, in the distant 2014 year, known to fans of science fiction except for the film "Changing Reality", but now probably everyone knows her thanks to the films "The Quiet Place" and "The Quiet Place 2". Good acting is not the only plus of the movie - quality action, well thought out plot, good direction, lack of snot and boring moments. The whole movie looks...wanted to say, all-metal.
You could say it's one of the best short time travel movies out there, and literally if not the only movie of its kind filled with full action and chopping. Eight years later I watched Edge of Tomorrow again and I wasn't disappointed, I didn't waste any time. And that's worth a lot, because I rarely review movies. Maybe there could have been a great series on the subject, but alas we never got around to it.
Recently the movie "Future War" was released, and you can compare what the lack of time travel effect means. It is too common, too ordinary. Separately I would like to note the appearance of the aliens - unlike the monsters from, for example, "A Quiet Place" or "Future War", which are shown as a biological chirping something between an "alien" and a locust, here the monsters look more like something alien and demonically amorphous, although also not devoid of mouths and eyes.
To sum up, Edge of Tomorrow does not get old and remains the coolest and most original sci-fi action film about temporal anomalies and swarming aliens.
