After ‘The Blood of Dr. Fu Manchu’, Jesús Franco took on another film adaptation of the stories about the famous doctor. This time, there was no trademark artistic eroticism. Nor was there a particularly appealing plot.
Fu Manchu's latest innovation—turning the world's oceans into ice—looked as heavy as the rest of the film.
The idea of “ice nine,” probably taken from Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, took on very boring nuances in Jesus Franco's hands. Actually, I was not at all surprised that after this film, the subject of Fu Manchu was not raised at all for many years.
This film lacked plot sophistication. However, Modesty Blaise and other films of that period had the same shortcomings. In their desire to repeat Dr. No and anticipate The Spy Who Loved Me, the producers created plots that were not always logical.
