A budget-friendly, well-made propaganda film about the technical capabilities of the United States Navy, which, according to the filmmakers, is “quite capable of carrying out such rescue operations.” And the operation was extremely difficult: rescuing the passengers of a sunken plane. The plane crashed into the sea because evil people wanted to hijack it, but there was no pilot among them who was good enough to fly it.
Although it is stated that the film is based on Arthur Hailey's novel, it tells its own story. The film can be divided into three parts: a terrorist plot, a melodrama, and a rescue operation. And while the film seems quite dynamic at first, the plot quickly sags, clinging to clichés and banalities. The Oscars for set design and costumes are, as I understand it, a high assessment of the underwater filming. But what do the costumes have to do with it?
The cast was chosen to appeal to fans of different genres. Personally, I watched the film for James Stewart and Christopher Lee. But, as it turned out, the main star was Jack Lemmon. He played the fearless and cool-headed captain of the aircraft and did it very well.
Before watching this film, I strongly recommend stocking up on something to munch on.
