Quite by accident I found this film and saw the famous actors and a rather high score decided to watch it. True, I was a little embarrassed by the duration of under 3 hours, but since I love military cinema, I still decided.
From the very beginning, the film is presented as almost a documentary, but this is only until the first American officers in military uniforms appear in the frame, with duffel bags on their shoulders, who seem to have come to a pioneer camp on vacation. Numerous attempts to escape and no reaction to them from the Germans will finally dispel all doubts before us - a military adventure film.
They vividly showed the captured Russians, who cannot be looked at without tears, they look like homeless people from some kind of station, unlike American officers who regularly dust off their military uniforms.
An intelligent German colonel (Camp Commandant) reads out a list of prisoners who have escaped from prison for the first time and politely asks not to make more escape attempts, even 10 minutes of screen time does not pass as these same prisoners from the list make a series of attempts to escape. And what do you think is the reaction of the Germans to this, but almost none of them returned to the stand at all, and a couple of others with an important air of winners went to the so-called punishment cell. After that, preparations for the 'Great Escape' begin, forging documents without leaving the barracks, several tons of earth from the tunnels quietly scattered around the perimeter of the camp, etc.
The most interesting part, in my opinion, after the escape, when the fugitives try to leave Germany in different ways. In this part there are wiser Germans and rich action and a dramatic ending.
What can be said about the film, the words 'Legend', 'Masterpiece' will be appropriate for American viewers (those who think that they won the war), but for our compatriots, I think 'A good American film' of the 60s is more suitable, with many then still young famous actors , which you can watch if you want.
