The formula for horror films, which is commonplace for viewers, is as follows: 90% horror special effects and 10% peripheral interactions between characters running around in panic (poorly developed characters, dull dialogue, etc.). everything is built on fake suspense, clichéd ‘screams, cries, and running around’.
The emphasis is shifted towards the bloodiest killings (and chases); the horror, the very horror that the main characters experience, and which (ideally) should be conveyed to the viewer, is limited to farcical facial expressions when in contact with the killer (monster, etc.).
The whole multifaceted spectrum of emotions: the thirst for life, the inner panic that arises and then gradually engulfs the character completely, the paralyzing horror, the desire to help one's neighbor or, conversely, to save oneself at their expense, despair and the realization of inevitable doom — all of this, as a rule, is absent, and viewers, accustomed to a ‘ragged, truncated’, formulaic layout, no longer expect anything like this.
The Descent is structured differently. No tinsel, no entourage, an intimate film, a minimalist style: only the bare rocks of underground caves, darkness, dirt, and five girls fighting for their lives. The emphasized naturalism, even with the presence of fantastic creatures, the absence of music, the everyday dialogues that are as close to real life as possible, the biographies on the eve of the “descent” — all this creates a frightening contrast with the struggle for survival that goes on from the middle of the film to the end.
The poor, dull picture does not distract the viewer's attention; it is a backdrop, and against this backdrop are real people, ordinary people: some are stronger, some are weaker, some have leadership qualities, and in some, the ability to fight awakens later, overcoming fear and inner brokenness. Realistic, cruel, believable. Unvarnished. You watch and you feel it.
When the heroines crawled through a narrow passage in the cave and one of them got stuck, I, sitting in front of the screen, experienced a similar panic attack, I almost suffocated! That's how much the film made me empathize and connect with it. The ending is devastating. Horrifying. Watching it is scary, and after watching it, you feel melancholy.
