Francis Coppola's long-suffering film, which has undergone a huge number of changes, both in terms of form and in terms of the script and a whole host of world-class actors.
Since childhood, Francis had been fascinated by Tucker's car and its creator. In the 1970s, the young director wanted to make a “dark musical” about the life of Preston Tucker, starring Jack Nicholson, but after several failed films by his studio, Coppola completely abandoned the idea. More than 10 years later, Coppola's friend and partner George Lucas (the creator of Star Wars, known to us all) revived the idea, but suggested that Francis change the format of the film and make it in the style of Frank Capra's classic films, with his direct participation in the project. However, Capra rejected the offer, believing that the film would be a financial failure (as it turned out, he was right, as the film did not make the necessary amount of money). Despite this, Coppola and Capra's screenwriter rewrote the early script and shot the actual biopic with Lucas's independent funding, as other studios were afraid to work with George after several failed projects under his leadership in the 1980s.
And so, the film was released. It didn't make any money, but it was nominated for three Oscars. The actors' performances are flawless, so it's very easy to connect with the characters' experiences while watching. They even showed the character of the famous aviator Howard Hughes, who was brilliantly played by Dean Stockwell. Now that's charisma, ladies and gentlemen.
I won't say anything about the plot. I'll just note that the film exceeded all my expectations.
