For Australian screenwriter and director Michael Shanks, Together is his debut in Hollywood cinema. Even at home, he had never shot anything serious. And now Michael has every chance of becoming a new star in the horror genre. For a first Hollywood project, the film has a very solid budget (17 million). Many directors started out with much smaller budgets. But the Australian newcomer seems to have been very lucky. In all likelihood, actress and producer Alison Brie liked the project, and thanks to her authority, she was able to attract investors by promising to play the lead role, which she did. In addition, Brie invited her husband Dave Franco to play the male lead. It should be noted right away that the on-screen couple, who are married in real life, greatly helped the film in conveying the depth of their feelings.

The film turned out to be quite intimate, with a minimal number of locations and actors. As for the script, it does not shine with a particular immersion into the depths of human relationships, although this is the basis of the entire narrative. The plot and the characters' arcs are as simple and straightforward as possible. So it's far from “Substance” with its semantic subtext on various social themes. Although “Together” touches on many interesting points in the question of codependency and loss of personal identity. The authors themselves say that they asked themselves: which is more important - loneliness or complete loss of self in love? Personally, I saw such questions, but I never got complete answers.
But in any case, the film has a very cool ideological hook, which is based not on the authors' fabrications in pursuit of a social agenda, but on the ancient Greek myth that humans were originally beings endowed with both female and male principles. They lived in harmony and experienced absolute happiness as one whole. The gods became jealous of them and eventually divided humans into two halves. Since then, everyone has been searching for their other half in order to find a sense of wholeness and true love.

In general, if we consider the film as a demonstration of the ancient Greek myth in action, it's a very cool idea, where the body horror format fits perfectly. However, I consider the authors' attempts to play on social themes to be unsuccessful.
