Relatively recently released horror thrillers Absence and Oculus director, and part-time co-screenwriter and editor of his films Mike Flanagan, has already managed to declare himself as a creator of worthy pictures in this genre. “Hush” he confirmed his high level of professionalism and skill.
The movie features only 5 actors, and from a technical point of view, it was shot with minimal use of special effects and locations: almost all the actions take place at night and within one house.
Little-known actress (who also acted here as a co-screenwriter) Kate Siegel coped very well with the role of a deaf-mute girl: you believe her, you worry about her, her character turned out to be alive, whole and intelligent, which is especially pleasant.
The psychopathic killer John Gallagher Jr. portrayed almost flawlessly, an excellent reincarnation. It's hard to believe this is the same actor who played in Cloverfield, 10 and Short Term 12.
Thanks to the main character's affliction, the director managed to add a couple of interesting and clever finds to the narrative, making you squirm in your chair and simply pleasing to the ear and eye.
“Hush” is not devoid of logical holes and inconsistencies, the plot is predictable and straightforward, but the movie has good dynamics and it is not boring to watch.
This motion picture is by no means a breakthrough or a new word in the genre, but it is a very interesting and qualitatively staged and played production that deserves your attention.
