Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort 4K 2014

To be honest, after the extremely unsuccessful fifth installment of “Wrong Turn,” I had no desire to watch the latest—sixth—part. But in the end, I decided to see the sad finale of such a promising franchise with my own eyes, and... unexpectedly, it turned out to be quite good.

The sixth Wrong Turn turned out to be very unusual. On the one hand, it has all the hallmarks of a B-grade slasher movie: lots of blood, lots of sex, and contrived conflicts between the main characters. The creators didn't even bother with the makeup of the main trio of antagonists this time around—it's clear that Three-Fingered, Sawtooth, and One-Eyed are not mutants, but actors in masks, even though you can't see them in detail. But at the same time, for the first time in all six films, we are presented with a rather interesting plot in which the main character finds his relatives in the depths of the Appalachians. Despite the fact that almost every character embodies some kind of stereotype, and all the blunders and flaws are overshadowed by sex scenes, I can't help thinking that there is something to it. It feels like the director really knew what kind of audience he was making the film for and made it exactly what everyone expected—not expensively shot, with primitive acting, but quite good for its level.

Once again, the trio of cannibals are only in the background, and the focus is on a run-down recreation center with strange owners, one of whom is a passionate blonde thirsting for a romantic relationship. The presence of ritual scenes in the plot is perceived as a rather cheap but effective technique – the aura of mystery has indeed been successfully created. And, just as importantly, we finally see the settlement of the mutants, the very ones who appeared in the second film. Thus, the prequel trilogy fulfills its ultimate task, and we see a bewildering but quite digestible backstory to the first film, which, after watching the sixth part, will be perceived as particularly ominous, because our imagination fills in what we were not shown—the fate of the surviving heroes. How long will the dark business that began in the twentieth century flourish? The active demonstration of the latest gadgets transports the events of the first film from the 2000s to the 2010s, so that the early “Wrong Turns” reflect the events of later years.

There is no need to mention that any of the actors give delightful performances, and they were not required to do so – the only requirement was to elicit the audience's sympathy, which all the young actresses, who in one way or another have to bare themselves for erotic scenes, managed to do quite well. Of course, Roxanne Pallette comes to the fore, portraying a typical heroine of easy virtue, who must be present in any slasher film. Sadie Katz and Talitha Luke-Erdle deserve credit, but Akila Zol is the only one who annoyed the entire film with her presence. Anthony Illott and the other actors give weak performances, but they are not terrible. Considering the category of this film, the cast is even acceptable.

In summary, it is worth acknowledging that the sixth installment, despite its number, turned out to be successful thanks to its focus on the plot rather than bloody scenes.
