There are two standout horror franchises that even people who aren’t particularly into video games have heard of: Silent Hill and Resident Evil. And while Resident Evil has always thrived on its mainstream appeal, interest in the more arthouse-oriented Silent Hill has only begun to resurge in the last few years, having faded after the release of the eighth and final main installment in 2012. The successful 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2 by the Polish company Bloober Team cemented the series’ comeback. A mindset close to that of Eastern Slavs seemingly helped the Poles better feel all this melancholy, the loneliness of an abandoned, half-ruined town where personal nightmares and monsters come to life in the signature spirit of wild Japanese fantasies. As with Lynch, there can be many explanations for everything that happens, just as there are many endings upon completing the game.

And now, two years later, Christopher Ghan’s film *Return to Silent Hill* is released. What kind of protagonist do we see? The cinematic James is not a lost, taciturn, almost Lynchian character battling the darkness breaking through, but rather the sweet dream of American teenage girls. The guy drives a Mustang—meaning he’s well-off and ready for the good life; he tries to paint and calls himself an artist—meaning he’s sensitive and not stupid. Though you wouldn’t really tell that from his face or his actions.

When the poor guy is suddenly thrust into a world of nightmares and moral dilemmas, he tries very hard to squeeze out suffering and deep feelings, but he still doesn’t fit in. All of this is more of a criticism of the acting, but in terms of the script, in his previous normal life, the guy really does come across as the hero of a cheap romantic melodrama. When the candy-and-bouquets phase ends and the first serious problems arise, the hapless romantic practically runs away from them right away. In the game, James tries to fight them for much longer before he breaks down.

The other actors in the film fare a bit better, but Eddie and Maria barely get a chance to shine in the otherworldly Silent Hill, leaving the viewer with a slight sense of bewilderment as to their significance. The presence of Angela and Laura is only barely justifiable. Christopher Gann also tries to tie in the religious cult theme from the first film here, in an attempt to reinterpret them within a unified framework. On the one hand, this is commendable, but, again, it leads to a distortion of James’s character.

In general, the attempt to simplify Silent Hill and explain everything to mainstream audiences is a losing proposition from the start. What’s needed here is more of an auteur approach—something in the vein of *The Road to Nowhere*, since the creators of *Silent Hill 2* made no secret of the fact that they were inspired by David Lynch’s work. And amid the constant action and running around, the source material’s lingering, melancholic atmosphere gets lost.

It’s hard to say why Gan, a director with great promise after *Brotherhood of the Wolf*, couldn’t take that path. Perhaps he himself didn’t want to take risks, or the producers limited him to certain constraints. However, within these constraints and the tight runtime, as a fan of the series, he tries to make ends meet, impressing with individual visual choices—for which he was once renowned—and Akira Yamaoka’s music from the original games, which is an undeniable plus. Still, the aftertaste is that of a fan-made project that isn’t quite put together right. For those who know the games well, the only things that might resonate are the soundtrack and familiar locations, along with a couple of intriguing scenes and images. For those who don’t know the games, perhaps the unusual monsters will pique their interest? Let’s hope this movie at least doesn’t hurt interest in Silent Hill.
