Global catastrophes are a favorite theme in cinema. Especially when humans themselves are to blame, polluting the environment, altering the Earth’s climate, and consequently affecting the behavior of all its inhabitants. This film tells the story of a variation on a global ecological disaster, as a result of which all wildlife begins to behave incredibly aggressively. And while “The Day of the Triffids” from the 1960s remains the undisputed leader in terms of plant attacks on the planet, this film stands as the most massive and terrifying portrayal of animals attacking humans, with no equal to this day.
The film is also unique in that the world-famous comedy actor Leslie Nielsen plays an absolutely serious role here, and he does so vividly, believably, and powerfully. He demonstrates his talent in transforming his character’s personality in this film and his ability to play absolutely any role. For comparison, one might recall his role as the villain in *The Twilight Zone*, for example.
The rest of the cast didn’t disappoint either. The film features a wide variety of characters, but practically all of them have their own unique flair and quirks. Many are memorable, standing out for the distinctiveness of their characters, their behavior, appearance, specific actions, or at least their deaths.
By the way, the animal attacks and deaths are flawlessly executed here. A complete sense of reality is created. No extras in animal suits, no obviously fake props, no computer-generated nonsense, and none of the other paradoxes of the film industry. Everything is very natural, incredibly creepy, and atmospheric. The MPAA must have been joking when they gave the film a PG rating. Although, given its profound message, you can watch such serious films with your family. That said, animal lovers should steer clear of this movie. Well, in terms of violence, the film turned out to be incredibly intense. It’s very dark, with an abundance of violence and blood—a very brutal and terrifying film that touches on and elevates the entire subject matter to a high level.
Its significance and depth of meaning make this horror film particularly valuable. Since few films truly make you think deeply, teach the viewer something, and convey a meaningful message to everyone watching. This sets it apart from the countless similar films about killer beasts that have been made throughout the history of cinema.
A deep and quite atmospheric film that will leave no one indifferent, showcasing human survival in extreme conditions, the struggle against a hostile environment, and a variation on the theme of an ecological disaster caused by humanity. A serious, terrifying film.
