“Last Breath” is a biographical film about the rescue of a diver who managed to spend 26 minutes underwater without oxygen. When asked how this was possible, scientists were unable to provide an answer—they say it was a unique combination of circumstances and advise against attempting to replicate it.
The film, however, isn’t about survival or useful tricks either: it’s a story of mutual aid, kindness, and compassion. It’s about what it means to be human. Short, highly dramatic, yet with a smooth flow, the film relies on the performances of its cast: the industrial divers are played by Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), and Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders). In fact, the latter is played by Chris Lemons, a real-life diver who was saved by thoughts of his beloved and the decisive actions of his colleagues. Woody’s character, Duncan, is on the verge of self-imposed retirement, and this story brings him back to life just as it does Chris. Finally, Dave, played by Simu, helped his colleague get back on the job.
Honestly, you watch this and think: coordinated work is possible in the real world if every participant is 100+ percent committed. And you also feel a sense of awe: grown men showing emotion, looking out for one another, getting invested. A normal reality, without toxic masculinity, without imposed femininity. A simple, on the whole, almost ordinary movie. But in this case, that’s all you need.
