In keeping with the old traditions of an era still steeped in Egyptology, the whole affair was set in motion by the ill-fated opening of a tomb containing yet another rebel who defied the cycle of life. The priests pacified her for an indefinite period with a ritual that cost them their lives, and Mr. Fuchs became the one who revived the curse and the Egyptian woman’s soul within his daughter (at the cost of his wife).
The plot outlined here does nothing to suggest that this is a film. This is not a sleepy séance, but a generational curse (which the entire expedition has fallen victim to). Each of the survivors took something ritualistic from the cave. A ring, figurines of a snake and a cat, a dog’s skull, and a bone dagger—and by the time the sultry heroine Valery Leon reached the appointed age, everything was set to come to pass.
Egypt, mad scientists, spiritualists, and occultists, a sarcophagus, and the bleeding corpse of an ancient woman don’t even come close to the role played here by Valery’s body. The scenes where her body, adorned with glittering jewelry, protrudes from the sarcophagus in one shot, or from her cleavage in another—that is what the entire film hinges on.
Hammer Studios had exhausted its potential, and instead of horror, it produced a film that you have to endure for an hour and a half.
Poor acting, mediocre costumes (except for the “ancient” ones), decent sets, and not a single second of a scary spectacle despite six corpses. And finally, the most memorable moment (if you forget about the scene where we get to see Leon’s bare butt) is the result of the victory over the dark servant and the ancient princess—Margaret’s costume, retrieved from the ruins. For a style like this, you can forgive everything, as long as you turn off your rational mind and don’t overvalue your own time.
