A cult horror satire that will make you think twice before buying country sausages. Motel Hell (1980) is a rare example of a horror film that is simultaneously funny, terrifying, and clever: Kevin Connor subtly satirizes the American provincial idyll, farm values, and the cult of “natural products,” turning them into literal cannibalism. Rovi Conn, in the role of the good-natured cannibal farmer Vincent, plays with such sincere warmth that you almost believe him—and that is precisely what makes the film truly unsettling.
The screenplay balances between genuine horror and black absurdist comedy without a single misstep: the secret garden with buried victims, the fattening scenes, family dinners—everything is presented with deliberate normality, which works far more effectively than straightforward gore. The final chainsaw duel in pig masks is one of the most iconic endings in all of grindhouse cinema, simultaneously insane and logical. For the 4K release, the film looks refreshed: the details of the rural setting, the dark tones, and the graininess of the original film are reproduced well.
