The tale of Madison, a young lady who witnesses bloody murders in her dreams. Waking up in a puddle of sweat, she realizes that this bloody carnage is really happening. Trying to prevent a series of murders and find the murderer, Madison turns to the cops, who giggle on the sidelines and twiddle their thumbs, and only one young detective gets involved in the investigation of this mystical story...
A fresh horror flick from the masterful Wang, so universally anticipated. But I got a complete disappointment from watching the film. Behind the patched and stylish picture hides a hastily crumpled handicraft from kindergarten. Uniform characters, a plot dotted with solid clichés, primitive screemers and an unsuccessful attempt to build suspense - and it all stretches for two hours of timing.
The film is a mixture of body horror, a bit of jallo, mystery and detective, but none of these genres are fully disclosed. Moreover, by the end the film rolls absurdly into the semblance of an action movie. And an interesting idea at first sight turns out to be just another banal move, only with a failed attempt to think up something new.
If you watch horror a couple of times a year, and you are not a fan of the genre, you will probably like "Malignant" as an entertainment for the evening. For fans of the genre, however, James Wan's creation is a secondary, rambling and unattractive work at the level of a debutant director.
As a result it is a weak horror film in all respects, although the murder scenes are spectacular, but that is probably the only thing the film can boast.
