For much of the film, the viewer remains in that world “where we all go.” The filmmakers chose to stick to the “classic” portrayal of that world: hell and heaven, complete with all their attributes and cause-and-effect dynamics… In any case, there are no “new developments” to be seen…
This story of great love is closely intertwined with mysticism. The visuals are extremely vivid, displaying the full spectrum of colors, with contrast sometimes cranked up to the max. It would seem: just watch, enjoy, and be amazed… However, this imagery doesn’t evoke a sense of beauty, serenity, peace, or tranquility for me… on the contrary, you feel anxiety and unease—at times, it’s even a bit eerie… Perhaps this is because the “reality” of that world is a substance unknown to us, and no one has ever returned from there with confirmed stories or facts…
There are a lot of special effects and graphics… it seemed like too much to me.
And also… they showed us this kind of Love… well, exactly this kind of love—a fairy-tale-like, unbelievable love… because of that, it looks contrived and made-up, detached from reality, and believing in it is even harder than believing in the afterlife.
The film’s main theme is clear, but there’s no escaping the feeling of excessive “sweetness” in such a lofty relationship… which, as the film neared its end, became increasingly unsettling and irritating…
I liked Robin Williams’ performance. Perhaps I’m biased toward him, but it was his character who held my full attention… The female lead, played by Shiorra, is certainly good… and she spends the entire movie either laughing or crying… and she cries very convincingly.
However… despite all my irony, I enjoyed watching the movie.
