“The Mastermind” (2025)
The film is set in the 1970s. James Mooney (Josh O’Connor), a former architect, has taken to stealing small museum artifacts and suddenly decides to steal four paintings by Arthur Dove—and that’s just the beginning.
Director Kelly Reichardt tells the story of an absurd heist.
The events take place in the midst of the Vietnam War: protests and lost souls, with the final five years of a brutal war still ahead, leading to economic collapse.
The chaos of events grinds down the life of the “little guy,” who can’t find the right solutions or the loved ones he could rely on. Stupid, desperate decisions that lead to a dead end.
You won’t see the usual action sequences typical of heist movies in this film.
A contemplative film featuring an amazing performance by lead actor Josh O’Connor.
And the entire story is underscored by the stunning music of composer Rob Mazurek.
This film isn’t for everyone; for some, Reichard’s latest work might even serve as a good sleeping pill.
