A masterpiece directed by Michael Mann was presented. I remember my impressions after his cult "Fight" with Al Pacino and Robert De Nino. It was a masterpiece, why hide there.
We can then conclude that the director makes a good movie, and in particular a good detective story with elements of noir.
What do we have here? I would like to say from the atmosphere. It turned out to be really interesting in terms of the fact that it creates a taste of quality noir with a mixture of moderate, nightly, urban palette.
The style of the director is very striking, who conceptually expressed him in this movie. He took as a basis something from the Fight, and this is not a genre or even the main idea. Maybe it's a matter of tension, because there are a number of scenes when your nerves are heated to the limit along with the nerves of the character. This is the very technique when the viewer can feel himself in the place of the main character, get into the screen. I believe that this can already tell about its quality.
But the script, the subtext in the script, characters and situations deserves special attention. The frantic interconnection of characters that from the outside look like absolute opposites. The director managed to convey the difference and kinship of the characters.
Regardless of this, there is a feeling of emptiness, understatement, which the director has already left us for reflection. What else do you need for a great movie?
And also incredible respect for Jamie Foxx, who was nominated for an Oscar for this role. His character was quite bright.
This is a movie for true connoisseurs of the genre.
