Brothers Bette and Drew Pierce are slowly but surely moving in the direction of certain heights and try not to disappoint their fans, which have already accumulated a lot. The brothers' first high-profile film was Deadheads, an ironic zombie horror that raised complex social issues. Then the Piers decided to take a break, collect their thoughts and shoot a more serious film, which was The First Witch, which frightens not only with its unforgettable villainess, but also with its stylish logo - an inverted letter "A".
Plot. Boyfriend Ben, after his parents divorced for the summer, comes to his father Liam in a quiet town. To earn some money, Ben gets a job at the boat dock to his father, where he meets his colleague Mallory. Gradually, the hero is drawn into local youth life and being in nature ceases to be a torment for him, but more and more Ben's attention falls on a married couple with children who live nearby.
Ben sees that something is wrong with them, yesterday they were behaving normally, and now they seem to be estranged from the whole world. The guy believes that a witch has settled in a neighboring house and is trying to find evidence for his suspicions. But when no one believes you, and you can only rely on a weird girlfriend, then it is difficult to find out the whole truth.
I can generally describe this film as a pleasant tense fairy tale, where there are not many scary moments, but the tension grows from moment to moment. The directors worked on the style, content and were able to create a scary plot where everything happens for a reason. That is, if Ben is attacked by local major bullies, then this will have an impact on history. I am glad that the little things make sense and are not present in the film only for the general dramatic workload.
The witch herself turned out to be scary, she will give odds to many other villains from mystical films, and this can also be added to this film's plus. It was interesting for me to follow her, and she skillfully scared. And it's good that when creating it they relied on makeup, and not on special effects. Still, it's good when authors assess their abilities sensibly and know how to work in the old fashioned way.
You may not see something new for yourself here, but the "First Witch" can be interesting, she keeps the level and tension. I think you should watch it if you like good horror movies with a taste of good old movies.
