Renaissance is Christian Volkmann's second film, and the director worked on it for six years, drawing inspiration from 1950s noir. Christian Volkmann perfectly illustrates the proven thesis that everything new is well-forgotten old. The title of the film prompts us to rephrase a familiar saying: the new is the revival of the old.
Motion capture technology was used in the making of the film (sensors are attached to the actors, and the information from them is sent to a computer, allowing virtual characters to be created with maximum realism).
The most striking feature of the film is its execution! Renaissance is shot entirely in black and white. It is this feature that won Renaissance the grand prize at the Annecy Animation Festival.
Volkman chose a plot familiar to viewers for his film: in a gloomy city, a brave police officer, burdened by inner turmoil, conducts an investigation, during which he meets a charismatic doctor, a femme fatale, and a cynical villain, and ultimately discovers a terrible truth. But despite the standard plot, this film is very interesting to watch!
To sum up, I will say that there are very few original creations like Renaissance! It's just amazing how, with the help of only two colors, you can show an entire city and the entire spectrum of human emotions! Therefore, every movie lover should definitely take the time to watch this film! I assure you, you will truly enjoy it!
