Peter Neal, the famous writer, arrives in Rome to promote his new book "Shiver", no sooner does he get off the plane than he encounters a detective who informs him about the murder of a girl who has literally been fed the pages of this very "Shiver". The further it goes on, the merrier - the murderer continues his atrocities, as if screening a book of his favorite writer, gradually getting closer and closer to the writer himself and sending him cute little messages with photos and making phone calls, muttering something crazy in a weird voice. This is all very nice, of course, and both the police and Peter appreciate the fan's loyalty, but we have to catch him. And who is this fan?
Another detective story with a dash of thriller from Argento, and what I like about them is that the denouement almost always comes out completely unexpected. As always, you're left wondering who the killer is. And if you guess here, it's quite possible that in fact it turns out to be not as simple as it seems - the ending is wonderful, this is something I didn't expect. This film again uses the first-person camera technique, in this case the killer, and I must say I like that. In general, the setting and styling are classic Argentinian - there is something mesmerizing, even nostalgic about it.
Also, be warned, do not expect good acting, almost all actors are very overplayed, and this time this fact was striking the eye zealously - too much. Sorry, but minus. I don't have much of a sense of suspense either, but in some places the picture is pretty intense: I especially want to mark out two scenes - the chase with the dog was terrifying (I'm terrified of dogs), and then there was a mad and tireless Doberman... and the ending scene with beheading, axe and other funny things - here they are, the promised fountains of blood! The killer's identity and motives are also quite appealing - interesting.
"Shiver" is a good movie, but I wouldn't call it Argento's best film, please. No more than a great detective and a pretty good thriller, again - the intrigue holds up well, the denouement is surprising. But I don't think I'll watch this movie again.
