"The Usual Suspects was a great success with the public and generated quite a lot of discussion. Everyone who saw this movie can be divided into several groups. The first ones thought that this movie, which reveals all the cards only in the finale, is good to watch once. The second group assured them that they could watch it endlessly even knowing all the scenes and dialogues by heart. Still others argued that the plot is trite, the ending is predictable, and Bryn Singer is a profiteer. Meanwhile, the academics, who apparently can be safely counted in the first group, left behind Braveheart, Nixon, Toy Story and The Great Aphrodite, giving the Oscar for Best Screenplay to The Usual Suspects.
Who is Kaiser Soze, and does he even exist? Is it true that he is a gangster who brings terror to the entire criminal fraternity or is he the bloodthirsty hero of a fairy tale that gangsters scare their children with? A hell of a lot of questions the viewer asks himself while watching the film, the elements of the plot of which Singer has built up so intricately that it is not easy to figure out who is who in this story.
Singer has given the viewer food for thought and pleasure for the eyes, two hours of pondering in search of the truth and unraveling cunning riddles. At the same time, he manages not to break the sense of proportion by not revealing the cards until the last minute of the film.
