An incredibly beautiful and talentedly performed story about the immortal adventures of the great Baron Munchausen. It is very strange that this film has not received enough attention from the audience, even in spite of all the eminence of the director. And even though it is quite an early Terry Gilliam's film, it is filled with that special magic and extravaganza, which are the visiting card of the great master's creativity.
The plot of the picture is a mosaic of well-known adventures of the baron, which are wonderfully intertwined, delighting with their originality. The amazing atmosphere of a holiday and a fairy tale is supplemented with magnificent decorations, costumes and characters (and the talent of the director, of course). The actors are superb; Jon Neville is brilliant as the Baron (one has to wonder if he really is Munchausen), with the celebrated Uma Thurman and Robin Williams in a very unexpected and extravagant performance.
And then there is the humor - of course, what baron is without an ironic look at ordinary things? It is hard to call this picture a comedy, but rather a comic farce: the characters' humorous dialogues just want to write them down on a piece of paper and enjoy them alternately.
Bottom line: An amazing fairy tale, hilarious, beautiful, magical. Will be of interest to fans of the genre and, in fact, Terry Gilliam, as well as to ordinary viewers who have an interest in unconventional and amusing films. A tremendous charge of positivity!
