Bubba Ho-Tep 4K 2002

It's a shame that I saw this film now and not in 2002... though maybe if I had seen it six years ago I wouldn't have taken it as well as I do now. And indeed, you have to understand the film, feel the story, sympathize with the characters and think about it. About what? Apparently, above all, about his life.

Bubba Ho-Tep, are we watching a comedy? Quite possibly. The comic absurdity with the elderly Elvis, the black-clad Kennedy, and the vicious mummy who eats souls, sucking them out of every orifice in the body, not even shunning anal, is there, but comedy is the general background.

Horror? No, it doesn't smell like horror, despite some pretty good work by the "makeup artists" who did a good job on the mummy and some rather poignant moments. Yes, and the atmosphere is good, you can feel the influence of a stuffed hand on Fantasma, the smell of death in the stale, old-fashioned air is felt on the other side of the screen. But not horror. There is only a hint of horror, filling out the general background.

Tragedy, drama? Of course, the heart will ache, especially for those who were fond of Elvis's works, and not only for that reason. The very image of a man, an idol for millions, who lived 20 years of his life in oblivion and woke up as a decrepit, helpless old man, doomed to live out his remaining years in oblivion and loneliness. So? No, the drama is just the general background.

See Bubba Ho-Tep, the film about the King's last adventure, a Coscarelli phantasmagoria that provided Bruce Campbell, in many years of a second-rate film career, with maybe his best role, his best image in years. Watch Bubba Ho-Tep and, if it does not make you think about life in its own way, but in the right way and whether it should be changed, because tomorrow you will already comb out your gray hair and it will be too late to change anything, you will spend at least a good hour and a half.

Oh, and the main soundtrack. It's been a long time since I've heard such a soul-piercing melody.
