I won't be too hard and verbose, but I'll tell you right away: this part of 'Rocky' is out of this world.
The first three parts, despite Rocky's wife, the fights (not professional boxing, that's a separate story) and the naivety of the boxers, took the psychology of the main character, his determination and courage, at least to some extent, the thoughtfulness of the plot details.
In this part, in addition to the aforementioned disadvantages, there is something that threw me into shock. Well, is it really possible to portray the Soviet Union, Russia in the end? I will note only a few details.
1) Mercedes. As you know, the USSR has always been a closed country and it is not clear where did the government get foreign cars? No, they should have shown a Volga...
2) Training before the fight of Ivan Drago and Rocky Balboa... That's something. The American chops wood and pulls the loaded sleigh over the snowdrifts, and the Russian 'swings' in ideal conditions on some aggregates, all sorts of substances are injected into him... Here obviously Rocky is already more like a Russian.
3) The boxer lifted the Gensec by the scruff of the neck. Yes, that was when Ivan was rebuked for losing. But to GenSec himself?! Ivan would have been shot immediately.
4) It's a trifle, but the Russian word 'Raz' instead of the original 'Round' in the boxing just cut the eye.
And at the end of the film the Soviet audience shouted 'Rocky! Rocky!". So much for patriotism.
Stallone didn't do a good job as a director. Yes, it must have been hard work to portray the Soviet Union at the time, but if you can't - why bother? Although for the American audience the film must have been 'up to snuff'.
Well, it's just the details that literally killed me, a Russian viewer. And the spectacular plot and the performance of a harsh Dolph Lungren somehow pulls the film to a single viewing.
