After watching James Wan's "Astral," I was in excellent spirits! It's been a long time since I've been this excited and inspired by mystery. Two hours of quality nerve tickling!
The film instantly climbed in my personal rating (if you take the closest stylistically) to the level of "A History of Two Sisters" and "The Others" and encroached on the sacred - the association with the great "The Shining" by Kubrick! "Child of Darkness", "The Key to All Doors", "Mirrors", and even "Asylum" were left behind (although, I must give credit to "Asylum", it is a more subtle movie than "Astral", and not a hint of Americanism).
Scary mysticism, style, charming humor, "letting go" of the viewer when it is so necessary, piercing to the shivers in the limbs - and a feeling of freshness on the way out, well, what else is required for happiness?
Actresses Barbara Hershey (Portman's mom in Black Swan) and Lynn Shay, the unforgettable Mom from the beloved Dead End, contributed to the effectiveness of the perception.
