A mad doctor slices off the facial skin of girls in order to graft it onto the face of his daughter, who has been seriously injured in an accident. The skin doesn't take root, so they have to look for new victims, while the daughter dreams of suicide and wanders around the estate like a puppet Alice who has fallen into a terrible Looking-Glass from which there is no way out - all the mirrors have been removed....
If you only knew what kind of sap... From a plot suitable only for low-brow thrash, Franju creates a movie of amazing beauty and poetry - without any shame at all - the camera does not turn away, even when the doctor cuts off the skin of the victims.
The final scene (and the melody that accompanies it) is one of the strongest movie impressions in a very long time - unforgettable. Great movie.
