I'll get right to the point. In my opinion, 'Blue Is the Warmest Color' is one of the most overrated movies of recent times. No, overrated is a bit of a misnomer. More like undeservedly praised. Hundreds of critics around the world are drooling over it and writing glowing reviews. There's a lot of shouting and controversy. Palme d'Or. Is the movie that good? Probably not. Then why all the fuss?
The answer is simple: leisbian love.
The thing is, it's a very timely movie. It came right on the heels of a wave of furious discussions and debates about homosexuality. Nowadays it is very and very topical, here and there laws that infringe on their rights come into force, rallies are held in their defense. So all of these reviews, including The Branch, are pure politics. I note that this is purely my personal opinion.
As for the movie itself. It's a movie about relationships. Yes, about relationships between people of the same sex. But if we try to abstract from it, we see a very ordinary love story, heard a hundred times. And it's a bit long. But, I don't argue, with beautiful close-ups and not bad acting. I guess that's all the pluses. Basically, I don't even know what else to add here. I would like to pay special attention to the bed scenes: it is simply unseemly to make them so long.
Some years later, when same-sex love will not be something special, but a commonplace phenomenon, people watching this movie will not understand why it won the main prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
