This movie premiered in 1992, 14 years ago. Since then, a lot of water has passed - the actors and director have aged, many films have appeared, but 'Death Becomes Her' is still loved and revered by the audience. The boundaries of the genre have expanded. Audience tastes have changed, transformed the criteria for evaluating fantastic and comedy movies, the more sub-genre 'black comedy' has become different. And 'Death Becomes Her' is still out of competition! It's an amazing movie, just a masterpiece among its kind, and the more I watch it, the more and more I like it. It has everything you need to consider a movie a masterpiece.
First of all, the script. Why in 1992 you could still imagine a sci-fi comedy being entertaining, insanely interesting, beautiful and...clever. There are no idiocies in the script, no strains and sags - it's remarkably smooth, you get the feeling that it was written based on the book - so strong is its literary subtext.
Secondly, the movie has an ineffable atmosphere - it is shot as if in the 60s and refers us to both modern comedy and the atmosphere of classic horror movies. The movie is filled with the spirit of magic and unreality, huge stone castles, eternal rain, endless corridors and staircases - and all this in the center of modern Los Angeles! Visually the picture is made marvelously. And there is nothing to say about special effects - there are not many of them, but they are able to delight even now. But the main thing is that in the movie they are only to maintain the general atmosphere, only a few masters can do that - in particular, Zemeckis does it perfectly. Remember, at least, his masterpiece 'Back to the Future' - the movie used only 32 special effects, but it is still a benchmark of science fiction. Not every director can do that! Zemeckis, a disciple of Spielberg, creates spectacular movies without losing the point.
Thirdly, this movie has mind-blowing acting, which in comedies, and even in such spectacular ones - now there is simply no such thing! A couple of bitches in the composition of Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn - it's a total delight! Their confrontation, bickering, and then 'touching' reconciliation, every gesture, every movement - played simply brilliantly. This is especially true of Meryl Streep - no one has ever played a bitch so chic! And Hawn is incredibly sexy, attractive and bitchy and seductive.
I really liked Bruce Willis - a drunken, losing his shtny on the move...how I love it when such actors show their talent, breaking away from their superhero masks and playing in a real way! Thanks to this movie I believed for the first time that Willis is a real actor and not just a textured action hero. And, of course, I liked Isabella Rossellini - she doesn't even need to play, just by her appearance she makes you breathe intermittently and your heartbeat quicken.
Everything in this movie is great! The costume design, the architecture, the camerawork, the sets.It is filled with a hell of a lot of fun - chien and cynical humor, which, however, causes more joy than all modern youth comedies put together. Classic. This movie will remain eternally young without any elixirs for a long time!
