What went down - Foals
When you see a bunch of names of executive producers and just producers in the credits at the beginning, expect trouble. Seriously. Yes, we're aware of the status of the long-suffering project that was supposed to Phoenix out of production hell to wow audiences around the world, injecting them with vigorous adrenaline and making the two hundred and seventh bone in their body appear. Understandably, some producers showed up, others left, still others tried something. Still, the main hope was in the director, whose name is Rupert Sanders and who, as it turns out, isn't even a director. He may be a great clipmaker, he may know how to use slo-mo, he may see in his mind's eye how to stage a couple of action scenes, but that's about it. A man who failed with 'Ghost in the Armor' and hasn't made anything for 7 years (the TV series doesn't count) would give a lot to 'The Crow'.
Disorder - Joy Division
First off, the choice for the female lead is in favor of the world-famous FKA Twigs, whose personal life, which includes names like Robert Pattinson and Shia LaBeouf, is far more interesting than her music career. Their on-screen pairing with Bill Skarsgard has little or no chemistry with physics and biology. He's a giant, she's tiny. Even as non-phoros, they don't fit together visually. What to write about the acquaintance of their heroes in a cozy rehab, where a couple of slanted glances were enough to ignite a spark, the guys fell in love, ran away together and began to revel in each other in a drug frenzy. That's how Rupert Sanders sees the romance, so we're all left to believe and endure half of the movie this impossible love between an obscure kid with no particular occupation and a bad girl, about whom the flamboyant band 'Vintage' once sang.
Boadicea - Enya
Secondly, the visual appearance of the world in which the events take place. Everyone is using modern phones, then the protagonist takes in his hands a tube from the 90s and dials a number for a long time, pressing buttons. Everything is filmed practically in the interiors, what they have on the street, it is decidedly unknown. Even intentionally the picture is made dark, as if it allows the viewer to immerse deeper into the atmosphere, although you can only plant deeper vision, looking at the objects on the screen. Purgatory, where the protagonist discovers that he can still be a man, is like a platform where Harry and Dumbledore once stood, but now they are gone, everything is overgrown and covered with darkness. Not only did the tattooed kid spend half the movie with puberty romance, but then it took a significant chunk of time for him to realize his position and start acting.
Meaning - Cascadeur
Third, there is a strong whiff of secondary. The opening credits are strongly reminiscent of the iconic beginning of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. Three months ago in theaters “TheKid vs. Everybody”, that there, and in “The Crow” Bill Skarsgard lost characters who need time to gather themselves before serious events. And yes, the bare torso comes with it too, many female fans will be ready to lick all the blood off his pumped up body. The transitions between worlds and the otherworldliness of the protagonist reminded me of 'Constantine'. The ultra-violent fights have a clear origin. The final fight ended before it had a chance to start. You understand, there was not enough time, and the movie had to end. It was like watching a prequel to a grand trilogy that the executive producers must have had in mind.
Need 2 - Pinegrove
In the end, viewers around the world have seen or will see a dubious hybrid of a sweet melodrama for girls and a tough action movie for dudes, spiced up with a bit of sci-fi. Both sides will be quite happy. Just finish your soda and finish your chips. The message, of course, is clear. Love a man so that to dissolve in him, to jump after him into the abyss or fly with him into the sky, elementary to feel in the soul of an inspired feeling. Everyone deserves the right to love, despite a sordid past. Man, if the comics actually said that, fine. But if Rupert Sanders visually went completely wrong in thinking about a direct adaptation of a famous work, then you can understand the fans' disappointment. The only thing that saves the movie is Bill Skarsgard himself and the gorgeous famous songs. Especially Foals at the end! They were not expected to hear them!
