The director (who also wrote the screenplay) offers an unexpected and unique perspective on the essence of human nature, which—hidden somewhere deep within the consciousness—suddenly surfaces under the influence of tragic circumstances that radically alter the life of the film’s protagonist.
Neil Jordan has woven the plot so intricately that it takes a while to figure out what this movie is really about. It’s certainly not about the daily lives of Irish Republican Army (IRA) fighters; their military operation is merely a pretext to bring the main characters together. It all begins at a different time and in a different place. An encounter that becomes a trial for the lovers: a fugitive IRA fighter and the girlfriend of a fallen British soldier, whom he came to visit at the request of his former captor.
If only the bewildered Fergus knew what kind of person was hiding behind the appearance of an irresistible mixed-race beauty named Dil. If he had known—he wouldn’t have gone near her. But he did go near her, struck up a conversation, and fell in love. And once he’d fallen in love, he no longer had the strength to part with her, no matter… what. Perhaps it was in his nature, which Forest Whitaker’s charming character was able to “figure out” surprisingly quickly.
Jody, who is Black, “talked his way past” his guard, who, amid jokes and laughter, failed to notice the scheme the prisoner had foisted upon him. His girlfriend maintains this ruse with little effort until exactly the moment director Neil Jordan intended, revealing the hidden aspects of her nature at the climax.
The drama of the ensuing events lies not so much in Fergus’s struggle for his beloved as in his inner struggle to come to terms with his own feelings. Nature will have its way. The merry Jody knew this all along. One thing’s for sure—you can’t watch this movie with a straight face. Because Neil Jordan has cooked up quite a storm. What’s the catch? Well, that’s a secret! Just watch it.
