Let's start with the good stuff. Good cast, qualitatively built locations, colorful shots, musical accompaniment. This is where we can end all the pluses of this movie.
I gave this movie a 4/10 and highly do not recommend watching it unless you are a fan of the book.
So why is the movie so bad?
The story told in this movie is completely empty, the characters don't change, there are no morals, there is nothing that the viewer can follow with interest. After watching the movie, you don't take out of the theater any experiences or emotions.
Let's go through the movie.
We have a family consisting of four sisters, a mother and a father who went to war. Throughout the movie we hear from the heroines that they have a poor family, but they do not suffer any serious hardship. They occasionally attend balls, there is always food on the table, and the house is quite decently furnished. In fact, they call their family poor because they don't have servants and can't have a bunch of dresses. That's where their severe deprivation ends. But none of the sisters work or try to fix their situation in any way, they just stay at home and that's it. Most of all I am happy with the sister who instead of studying at school fooled around, and after that most of all said that girls have no chance to make it without a successful marriage.
The main characters don't have any goals, they don't make any effort to achieve anything, things just happen around them and that's why it's so boring to watch.
The director could have shown how hard the heroine is given these stories, how much effort she spends on it, but it is not shown. They could have shown why Amy has such an unusual character and is afraid to pursue a career as an artist, but it's not shown. It could have been shown why Meg has such a hard time with a little hardship that she can easily go off and buy fabric for a dress, but it's not shown.
The whole movie you're trying to figure out the characters' motives, it shouldn't be that way.
