The new work of the cool Hong Kong Chin Pow Soi, who made the hurricane sequel SPL, the strong “Motorway” and the cool “Assassins”, was eagerly awaited, and the expectations were more than justified, not without reason the 38-million dollar project was shot for 8 years.
Of course, the spectacular and shocking trailer is a bit of a liar, promising non-stop action, although there are no problems with the action part. Just 125-minute movie here does not consist entirely of action, because the trademark sentimentality here is not taken out of the brackets. There is room for dramatic moments, lyrics and sadness.
The beginning of the tape is extremely cheerful - the first 20 minutes are just the very non-stop action, and fight scenes, which are staged just brilliantly - stunts, fast sparring, a mixture of the trademark Chinese action and parkour in the spirit of “District 13”. - is spectacular and very cool. Then the movie makes almost 40-minute break for drama, life story, to then get back on the battle rails and start a new confrontation, which with small pauses will not stop until the finale, showing the viewer brutal and tough fights.
Yes, the fairy tale element closer to the finale has its place here, but it doesn't spoil the porridge and dilutes the story a bit, though if the creators had left the original realism (like in SPL), it wouldn't have become worse. In addition to the trademark fight scenes, the entourage with color and cool camerawork - Hong Kong of the 80s, the fortress city of Kowloon with its semi-dark narrow streets-corridors with lights, dilapidated buildings plus general plans - looks very beautiful and great!
The actors are not shabby - Sammo Hong, Louis Koo, Richie Ren, Kenny Won - veterans of Hong Kong. The main character Raymond Lam and his friends Terrence Lau and Herman Cheung are not bad either. Everyone looks good.
In conclusion, it turned out to be exactly what I expected - a cool Hong Kong action movie with respectable people on both sides of the camera and awesome action. A movie like it was made for me!
