Paris, Texas 4K 1984

Wim Wenders is one of the few directors who can make a masterful movie journey. This genre is quite surreal, requiring from the artist wisdom in perception of the external and calmness in its expression; the ability to convey the most important in a plot completely unsaturated with external collisions and actions. Wenders certainly has all of that. And 'Paris, Texas' is definitely one of the best films of its genre.

The plot and semantic theme of the film is the resurrection and new formation of an adult soul thanks to a child's open and unsophisticated gaze, love, and hope that young travelers give to adults.

Of course, exactly the same meaning was put by Wendres in his earlier movie 'Alice in the Cities', but somehow 'Paris, Texas' is shot by Wenders in an even more confident, adult, non-assertive way. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the hero of 'Paris, Texas' - Travis - finds himself thanks to his son, his reunion with his mother. It's love for his relatives - it makes a person even stronger than traveling with a foundling girl.

But 'Paris, Texas' is not only a strong and deep (maybe unnoticed at first) story and meaning, it's also incredibly beautiful and lively camerawork. From the very first frame to the very last, it's true art. When the camera freezes for a few minutes on some frame - you see how the movie smoothly flows into a painting or a photograph - into something perfectly composed.

The actors in the movie look very organic, natural, harmonious in ensemble with each other.

As for the musical accompaniment - Wim again uses the blues, as before in 'Alice in the Cities'. But if in the earlier work the picture seemed to sway on the rhythms of Canned Heat, now the Texas swing blues sounds somehow more aloof, quite acoustic, as in Leadbelly's work.

Of all these, the feeling of the picture is the most pleasant and the best. The movie is not instructive, there are no trite phrases said by the characters, no abundance of tears, stamps, ostentatious drama or the director's annoying idea to convey 'something important'.
One gets the feeling that Wenders made the movie for himself - as if another artistic attempt to understand himself, his essence through creativity. But that's what real artists do, they don't follow the crowd, they don't want to be liked, and they make extremely real, beautiful and lively movies - timeless movies like “Paris, Texas”.
