You can count on Laura Linney, without reservation or doubt about her qualifications. Mark Ruffalo is not entirely reliable, but in this film he tries to stand up for himself, showing more than one might think. Rory Culkin, who was a child at the time, will prove to be a stroke of luck, following in his brothers' footsteps to conquer the movie world, while Matthew Broderick will remind us of his best abilities.
Kenneth Lonergan has found a way to tell an interesting story about the simple but important things that fill such a turbulent life with problems: Mark Ruffalo's character has serious problems with his girlfriend, and he has many dark shadows in his past. Laura Linney's character is also going through difficult times and needs time to overcome them, dealing with the close attention of her new boss (Matthew Broderick) and an unexpected offer from her old friend.
For a single mother, the return of her prodigal son is fraught with unexpected discoveries about his changed character, and she herself is not the same person she used to be. Here's another way to relieve the tension: the interactions between a stubborn clerk (Linney) and his boss soon take on a comical and ironic tone reminiscent of an office romance.
The boyish fatherlessness of the Kalkins' youngest son, who has latched onto the man who has appeared in the house, takes on an important role, and the man, who has been wandering through life, feels a sense of his own necessity and the need to participate in the affairs of his bored nephew.
The film is not all-encompassing or comprehensive; it is simply close to reality, with its actions, doubts, trust, and indestructible desire for love—for home, family, and the people close to you. Without delving into the depths of the universe, the film balances on the edge of the funny and the serious, allowing us to observe the common traits of different people whose lives, as it were, break apart and come together again, colored by the fresh tones of change, pushing off from the shaky bottom of the past to rush toward the light that flickers with hope above the clear water.
Oscar and Golden Globe nominations are included. For good reason.
