I'm not being original, but when you watch films like this, you find yourself thinking more and more often, “Yeah, they don't make films like this anymore...” But they could. Coneheads is such a simple film, yet it's a brilliant comedy with a large dose of satire. With numerous overt and covert messages, it is engaging, funny, and kind.
After all, the most important thing in comedies is wit, humor, and imagination, all of which American cinema is currently destroying. And in Coneheads, the authors' imagination is in good shape — the screenwriters came up with so many funny little details, and there are just as many funny episodes in the film. Every little thing is played up—how the Eggheads eat, wash, walk, clean, have sex, kiss, work—and it's all very effective and funny. Lighthearted, kind jokes without any vulgarity or double meanings.
In addition, behind the Eggheads' masks are ordinary American immigrants, all of whose problems are also played out in a very funny way, and traditional family values are echoed in their own unique way by this family. There is no promotion of the American way of life; rather, on the contrary, Americans and their unshakable faith in their blessed country are mocked, but, in general, also without malice. Everything is done so sweetly and interestingly that after 10 minutes you completely forget about the cone-shaped heads of this family and, despite their plans to take over the whole earth, you immediately feel sympathy for them, and the egghead daughter remains beautiful even with a cone on her head.
Dan Aykroyd played one of his best roles — in 1993, he was still a brilliant comedian, “ghost hunter,” and “Blues Brother,” and there were no dreary ‘Crossroads’ or trashy “Spider's Web” yet... Over the years, you realize that it is precisely these simple, light-hearted comedies that provide comprehensive answers to simple problems that live the longest and are the ones you want to watch over and over again.
