Living in the age of superheroes and dreams of the apocalypse, when, presumably, all the special effects have already been invented, and the competition to outdo each other in coolness and money spent on them seems increasingly silly and pointless, it's so nice to look back at the acid-psychedelic sixties. To breathe in the clean, fresh air of healthy and wholesome enthusiasm — my lungs fill with heart-warming gas, and my eyes shine, buried in the screen, rather than looking boredly for support in the objects around me.
The Devil, as I prefer to call him, is my hero. The second man in my cinema, after the one and only Alain Delon, forgive me, I have too much in common with him (ah, girlish fantasies), who struck me last night with his appearance in a latex, I hope latex, tight-fitting suit. I did not expect such a reaction from myself. I was even surprised, and such things rarely happen to me.
This man, with his satanic laugh and his “you can't handle me” look, knows better than anyone how to fight the rotten capitalist world. For fun, he will steal millions of dollars so that he can later bask in them with his faithful girlfriend Eva. For her sake, the one and only, he will steal a necklace of rare beauty from under the police's nose. And then he will give up all these trifles of life just to get her back — the one and only. The Devil is a seductive devil who is so easy to fall in love with. Which is exactly what I did.
Thank you, Dino De Laurentiis. For the second time, after the cosmic Barbarella, you make me feel it — the warmth, charisma, charm, and glamour of the juicy sixties. Time puts everything in its place. I don't know what will become of today's computer-generated candy. But I do know that films like Diabolik will remain in the most reliable and secluded place. In the hearts of movie lovers.
Still, it's a pity that Mario Bava didn't make a sequel...
