One of the most beautiful films about friendship that I have ever seen. It is a picture about high human relations in the most terrible and low conditions, where, in theory, there should be no question of humanity.
John Schlesinger continues the trend of ‘dirty America’, his New York is ruthless and bloodthirsty, and the two main characters are naive, friendly and, like Cabiria, do not give up on their dream of a bright future. It is quite obvious that refined Hollywood ceased to be relevant in the late 1960s. Easy Rider, Midnight Cowboy... The American Academy evaluated films that showed the underside of glamour and the American dream, exposing the true nature of the well-fed American. Vagabonds and rebels became heroes.
Unlike Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Midnight Cowboy is not entirely dramatic; there is a certain elusive irony and undying hope in it.
It is worth noting the brilliant tandem of Hoffman and Voight - Rico the rat and the brave cowboy Joe. Midnight Cowboy conveys an unobtrusive and unpretentious moral - a person can remain human even if they have fallen so low that they steal food at banquets and sleep in a ruined building.
Midnight Cowboy is manly, unsentimental, and honest, and the director's message is clear and simple: human dignity is as unshakable as faith in a happy future.
