The film “Deathstalker, directed by Steven Kostanski in 2025, serves as a modern remake of the 1980s franchise. Kostanski, the director of "The Very Strange Alien" (2020) and "The Void" (2016)—films that blend practical effects with horror and humor—brings his signature style to this project. In earlier works such as "Manborg" (2011) and "The Leprechaun Returns" (2018), a passion for retro aesthetics—featuring rubber monsters and hand-crafted gory scenes—is evident. This film continues that tradition, offering a low-budget yet creative spectacle in the sword-and-sorcery genre. Given its production budget, the film looks respectable, with a focus on visual originality and respect for its sources of inspiration.

The plot follows the conventions of fantasy. A mighty warrior, the Death Hunter, finds a cursed amulet on the battlefield, becomes infected with dark magic, and is forced to battle monsters to prevent the awakening of an ancient evil. The story is engaging and logically structured, featuring character development and a fully realized hero’s journey. It’s a typical fantasy plot involving a magical amulet, but it works as a standalone story inspired by the second installment of the series, requiring no prior knowledge of the backstory. The engaging plot, featuring genuine characters who evolve and display compelling chemistry, creates the feeling of a cohesive adventure with lore that gradually unfolds. The narrative maintains tension through the hero’s dynamic confrontations with threats, while the relationships between the characters add depth without unnecessary complexity.

The film is replete with references to 1980s sword-and-sorcery classics, including the original “Deathstalker” and its sequel. It’s a love letter to the films of that era, with direct influence from the second installment. The film remains faithful to the source material but presents it with an ironic, self-aware approach.
The character voiced by Patton Oswalt serves as a deliberately annoying sidekick, reminiscent of Gwildor from "Masters of the Universe", but executed more successfully. The updated musical theme evokes nostalgia. This is a genuinely silly film with plenty of violence—a true tribute to 1980s–1990s fantasy. The B-movie-style reboot is a pleasant surprise. The monster designs and fight scenes pay homage to “Conan the Barbarian,” adapting elements for today’s audience without resorting to outdated genre clichés.

The visuals are one of the film’s strongest points. It features decent practical effects, fairly inventive creatures, and truly impressive prop work. The gory scenes are also great: they’re absurd and hilarious, with wild action sequences, excellent makeup, and decent practical special effects. The style echoes Astron-6 and “The Very Strange Alien,” where the gore level is significantly ramped up. Beautiful practical effects, excellent costumes, and deliberately kitschy gore scenes create a wild sense of nostalgia, where blood flows in clearly over-the-top quantities. The final sword looks so ridiculous that it only amplifies the impact of the final battle. The makeup is decent, and the monster costumes are detailed and convincing for a low-budget project. The visuals draw on Kostanski’s experience from “The Void,” where effects shaped the atmosphere, and here they enrich the fantasy world with gory accents. The monsters and sets demonstrate ingenuity, combining the spirit of the ’80s with modern production quality.

The humor is genuinely funny and self-deprecating at times: there are plenty of jokes bordering on parody, with unexpectedly funny moments from Daniel Bernhard as a charming adventurer. Scenes like giants punching each other in the groin against the backdrop of a serious dialogue fit the tone perfectly. The hilarious violence and playful homage to the source material are presented with irony. The film is absolutely crazy, yet full of fun. The dialogue is so monstrously clichéd that it becomes perfect, and the film frankly doesn’t take itself seriously. Patton Oswalt as Dudad amplifies the comedy of the protagonist’s annoying sidekick. This kind of humor echoes "Frankie Frico" (2024), where Kostanski also blends absurdity with genre clichés.

All in all, this is arguably the best “Deathstalker” to date—truly the best in the series’ history. For viewers who grew up on films like this, it’s a long-awaited return. At 60, Daniel Bernhard is perfectly cast in the role; he still moves with great agility and wields a sword magnificently. The film turns out to be unexpectedly engaging even for those unfamiliar with the genre. It’s simply a fun experience, full of respectful nods to the genre. The film will appeal to fans of the sword-and-sorcery genre. The lack of nudity doesn’t detract from the experience, as the film is made with love, is incredibly inventive, and is simply a joy to watch. A lo-fi genre treat with boldly quirky humor. For its budget and style, the film is truly a success, featuring Kostanski’s distinctly recognizable style that balances nostalgia, action, and humor.
