Richard Franklin shot this film after already becoming famous as a staunch follower of Alfred Hitchcock. Just consider the fact that he shot the film Psycho II with the legendary Anthony Perkins and Vera Miles.
In the film The Cape and the Dagger, Franklin continues to develop Hitchcock's main themes. This time, Franklin's attention is drawn to the theme of espionage. But he doesn't just make a “neo-Hitchcockian” spy film.
Franklin creates a film for children: a boy obsessed with spy games accidentally witnesses a murder. Of course, there is a spy conspiracy behind it all. Of course, no one believes him.
The lead role is played by Henry Thomas, star of Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. His father is played very convincingly by Dabney Coleman.
The result is a very enjoyable genre variation on the theme of ‘children and spies’, which nevertheless remains within the bounds of entertainment cinema.
