What choices did a recent Harvard graduate in the late 1960s have: to become a clone of his wealthy, respectable parents? Or perhaps to become a hippie, grow long hair, and protest against the Vietnam War?
Oh no, Benjamin is not ready for either, so he chooses a third option. Without giving up his father's gift—a luxurious Alfa Romeo—he tries to quietly rebel by allowing himself to be seduced by Mrs. Robinson, “the most attractive of all his parents' acquaintances” (c). Unable to find his place in the adult world, yet at the same time going with the flow, Benjamin does not realize that he is immersing himself in adult problems that are still unnecessary for him.
And here, ironically, in the person of Helen, Mrs. Robinson's daughter, true love comes to him, a love that is really worth fighting for.
Dustin Hoffman's brilliant film debut, Simon and Garfunkel's soulful music, famous quotes, the bright colors of California's nature, and a final scene that will be remembered forever. What else could a movie lover want?
The Graduate is a beautiful, very tender, and ironic film that is definitely worth watching! And it will never lose its freshness and relevance because it is as eternal as youth!
