When you think of Oliver Stone, iconic and highly significant films in their genre immediately come to mind, such as Platoon, Wall Street, and Natural Born Killers. The film in question, Savages, is closer to the story of two murderers in love, but the similarity is limited to the visual style, which looked appropriate there, but here seems unnecessary and extremely pointless.

Of course, the main problem here is the script, which Stone himself helped write. And it's clear that the director not only lost his touch, but also lost his mind. Never mind that in the world of Savages, a sultry beauty lives in peace and harmony with two tough guys—one smarter, the other stronger—and each of the trio is immoderately happy. There are no problems in this Swedish family, because business is going smoothly, even though they are involved in the production and sale of drugs. But what can you do, not everything can last forever, and an influential drug cartel decides to kidnap Ou, who, incidentally, acts as the narrator from the very beginning, trying to convince the viewer that a happy ending is not guaranteed. And then the authors seem to completely lose sight of the essence of what is happening, spouting such nonsense that even the dumb action movies of the 80s nervously smoke on the sidelines.

Films like this rarely claim to be realistic, especially since the director seems to have made it clear from the outset that this is an ironic, completely unserious action thriller. But unserious does not mean impossibly stupid, as in this case. In addition to the fact that the action was full of clichés typical of this genre, throughout the entire two hours, we are constantly presented with incredibly illogical, but presented as incredibly original, plot twists. Even more ridiculous is the melodramatic storyline, which is clearly superfluous here and, for some reason, brought to the forefront.

Taylor Kitsch clearly wants to stand out the most, but the actor has been incredibly unlucky with his projects. First, there was the flop of the year, John Carter, which did not deserve such a cold reception, and Battleship, which was trampled by cries of disapproval and, for some reason, did not recoup its costs at the box office, even though it is in many ways much better than the last two Transformers films. Now he's in a really bad movie, which is also a flop, but in every sense of the word. Aaron Johnson, who has grown up quickly in recent years, unfortunately fades among his co-stars, even though the latter don't even try and either play third fiddle (Travolta) or just fool around (Del Toro), or have completely lost their former talent and beauty (Hayek). As for the main character of all this mess, Blake Lively, she is only good in the few intimate scenes that are here, solely thanks to her sexual charisma.

In addition to all this, the equally rare episodes of actual fights are filmed in a very spectacular way, which again provokes laughter rather than admiration. I understand everything, but no matter how young, beautiful, or daring the central characters of this story are, it is simply impossible to do what they did alone, especially since the closer the ending gets, the more the production as a whole descends into a forced farce. What's more, the overly annoying filming style is even more exhausting, causing the viewer's gaze to constantly dart around in search of the clock.
