I watched Dark Star quite recently—a couple of years ago, when I started looking for early films by my favorite director, Carpenter. And I was very pleasantly surprised that even the director's graduation project was so good!
The Star is an amazing film: it's science fiction, comedy, and psychological drama all rolled into one... The film's budget is so laughable that it's impossible to watch the so-called “special effects” without tears of amusement... Of course, this wonderful story doesn't need them at all, but I still can't help remembering the cardboard spaceship floating against the backdrop of cardboard space... And the toothy alien “tomato” on hilarious duck feet, cobbled together from an inflatable ball? And, of course, the crew of the Dark Star deserves a separate song of praise — a strikingly charming company of carefree astronauts, each with their own vivid personality...
The ending of Star is very sad and beautiful...
