Westworld is not only a box office hit of the past, but also a classic—it is still an excellent film.
The theme chosen by Crichton is still relevant today, despite its overuse (the confrontation between humans and intelligent machines). If a fourth Terminator film is being made, it means that the creators are still concerned with this theme. Therefore, Westworld is not outdated at all; in essence, it is a version of Terminator, only with a nod to the 70s and the style of the Wild West.
Interestingly, the film begins with an advertisement for a new attraction, where there is entertainment to suit your taste, debauchery, the decline of Rome, the freedom of the Wild West, and the Middle Ages. Wealthy tourists choose what they want and enter a world carefully recreated for their entertainment, served by robots with artificial intelligence.
However, as is typical for a plot, something goes wrong. Errors in the robots' design accumulate, and the system malfunctions. The price for this will be the lives of real people.
The film's main focus is on the style of classic American westerns. The mixture of high technology and the Wild West makes the film timeless.
Yul Brynner recreated his performance from The Magnificent Seven in the film, but his robot gunman is just as magnificent. The confrontation between machine and man takes the form of a duel between cowboys of unequal strength.
All in all, this classic film, which is epoch-making in some ways, certainly deserves the attention of science fiction fans.
