It’s a very interesting approach—to tackle the subject of pornography without making even the slightest allusion to physical vulgarity. Meanwhile, the film’s director presents many examples of spiritual vulgarity and “diverts” the viewer’s attention from the subject of pornography to the theme of Mr. Ogata’s depraved love for his stepdaughter.
Of course, Imamura likely views this strange romance, accompanied by a number of negative elements, as a consequence of Ogata’s spiritual emptiness.
You can sense that the director tried to create a very precise psychological drama, but I felt the film dragged on.
The last half hour could easily have been cut down to 5–10 minutes. This kind of academic approach “dampens” the impression left by the film.
In conclusion: a Japanese psychological drama about the everyday life of a pornographer who, to his misfortune, fell in love with a young woman completely unsuitable for him—who, moreover, was his stepdaughter.
