This is a genre film that treats its source material with respect and doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. It’s a manifesto of love for the craft. Everything else is just details. It’s an honest film for fans, made with love—that very feeling is what makes any project great. You can’t measure it by the standards of drama or arthouse cinema, because this film never promised anything else, and I love it when people do things with love. This approach works everywhere: in games, in movies, in music, in books—and even in a simple conversation. This is a movie for viewers with genuine emotions, free of snobbery, not for critics who will look for depth where there isn’t any and criticize it for things the film never promised.

Critics claim that the dialogue is “wooden” and the characters are “two-dimensional”—but this is a genre film about Mortal Kombat, not "Citizen Kane" or "War and Peace". There’s no depth here, but there are simple dramatic hooks that work.

Simplicity isn’t a flaw!

All the characters are vivid—they’re not two-dimensional! They all have their own personalities: Johnny Cage is a cynical joker who’s disillusioned with life, but by the end he changes and regains his self-confidence; Kano is an amoral libertine who revels in human baseness and vices, but for him, a dictatorship without beer and women is worse than death.

Liu Kang is a disciplined warrior who strives for spiritual and physical self-improvement and the highest human ideal, and the battle scene with his brother Kung Lao is the most beautiful and dramatic. The antiheroes Shang Tsung and Kuan Chi aren’t caricatured villains; they’re schemers with grand ambitions and vivid personalities. These aren’t one-dimensional characters! It’s just that the critics are blind—they’re incapable of seeing the details. For them, the game’s genre and mythology are a red rag to a bull, just like in a Spanish bullfight: “They wave their horns—and we get a kick out of it.”

The fantasy mythology is absurd, but the screenplay is well-thought-out; it caters to fans and respects the audience—it’s not a slapdash production. I hate slapdash productions—and there’s none of that here. This is an entertaining movie, made with love and care.

The plot is simple. But the twists within it are unexpected. They make you empathize, feel disappointed, and demand an emotional farewell to the characters you’ve grown to love; it’s simple drama, but it works!
The unexpected plot twists involving Lord Raiden, the strongest fighter Cole Young, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Jax Briggs, and the encounter with Scorpion/Hanzo Hasashi—all of this is unpredictable and surprising; all of it is emotional and dramatic!

I’d prefer dark realism, but even so—I accept the genre with its absurd mythology, with that primitive MacGuffin in the form of a magical talisman, with the witty banter between Johnny Cage and Kano, with the battle between brothers, with the treacherous and cruel Shao Kahn—I see the creators’ hard work, I see the actors’ dedication, I see the beautiful and spectacular fight choreography, which, with its rhythm, makes your heart race—and I’m grateful for all their hard work! There’s no slapdash work here—it’s a manifesto of love for the game, filmed professionally and with soul, while remaining honest with the audience.
