The latest film from the once-iconic director is being released amid complete silence. Guy Ritchie’s early works won over audiences with their sparkle, high-quality and well-crafted dialogue, and sharp, inventive action. But now, there’s no trace left of his former greatness: his new works don’t hold a candle to his older ones. The very aspects that made viewers fall in love with the master have, for some reason, vanished, replaced by something banal and frankly boring. Is this new film the beginning of a turnaround, or does it confirm a disheartening trend? Let’s take a closer look.

Plot. A secret team of elite operatives, accustomed to operating in the deepest shadows, is assigned the most dangerous mission of their careers. When a ruthless dictator steals a billion-dollar fortune, it falls to them to infiltrate his lair and recover the colossal sum. What was conceived as the nearly impossible heist of the century rapidly unravels and turns into a deadly game where not only the money but also their own lives are at stake. Now, to survive amid betrayal, deception, and brutal traps, these professionals will have to use their entire arsenal, calculating every move in advance.

A suffocating setup. The first 45 minutes of the film are simply unbearable torture! Instead of action, we’re bombarded nonstop with a voice-over and a tedious, spoon-fed explanation of the plot. The characters just walk around and explain to each other what’s happening. It looks ridiculous!

Cardboard and lifeless characters. The main characters are completely devoid of personality. The most talented actors have been turned into walking mannequins. Their jokes are forced, and their behavior is either too arrogant or wooden. The strong “lady boss” ultimately turns into a clichéd damsel in distress. How much more can we take?!

Boredom and predictability. Throughout the entire movie, only one word kept running through my head: “clumsy.” The plot about lawyers, cops, and corrupt billionaires is painfully banal, clichéd, and unremarkable—there are millions of projects like this. Not a single coherent plot twist, and huge gaps in the narrative logic. The action scenes came across as lazy and lackluster. Ritchie is just repeating his own old tricks. And since they didn’t work before, why on earth would anything be different here?

The ending is a total letdown. They drag out the exposition for so long and tediously, only to rush haphazardly into the third act and leave you feeling cheated by the resolution.

The actors’ potential. On paper, the trio of Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González sounds like every action fan’s dream. At certain moments, they even try to project at least some charisma. But the poor script doesn’t give them a chance. What’s even more disappointing is that the film completely wasted Rosamund Pike, who is capable of carrying entire projects on her own, yet here it’s as if she wasn’t even there. And here’s another amusing fact: Cavill got completely lost in the shadow of Gyllenhaal; he almost turned into an extra.

The visuals. This is perhaps the only thing the film has going for it. Ritchie’s visual style is still intact; the landscapes and locations look rich and lavish. I wouldn’t say it’s exactly “wow,” but it’s certainly watchable.
